Chrysocolla, a hydrous copper silicate, can be found in Britain, Chile, Peru, Russia, The United States & Zaire. This common stone has a hardness range of 2-4 on the Mohs Scale, though it can be significantly harder when combined with Quartz or Chalcedony. It crystalizes in botryoidal form, crusts, layers, masses & microscopic needles and druzy can also be found in Chrysocolla specimens with quartz. Colors range from blue, green & turquoise and black or brown when it contains high amounts of impurities. Chrysocolla in its gemmy state, known as gem silica, is the highest grade, is rare and more costly.
